Protesters backed by Army and ISI marched on to Islamabad; wanting to destroy the Democratic institutions of the country. They gathered the audience with charisma, free musical concerts and fair-coloured women asking to be married to the leader of protesters. Government first ignored them, then ridiculed them, used force on them but then backed off, ran towards Army but then all of sudden got the most brilliant idea of all time – they went to Parliament for the first time. Something that they were elected to do but between being busy travelling around the world for “diplomacy” and getting business deals for their family, it was kind of aContinue reading
At the end of August 2014 Pakistan stands much more polarized, confused and divided. And perhaps after the 2013 elections for the first time even families stand divided on which side to support. Usual trajectory of the action of support lie however around mostly the scale of age. If you are above 50, you are more likely to oppose what Imran Khan is doing then those below that psychological line. But why?
Before going ahead let’s see what exactly their grievances are. In no particular order they revolve around: (a) Imran Khan and PTI has led in street/mob politics. (b) Imran Khan has no respect for the institutions of the country. (c) Imran Khan has introduced bad language in to the politics. (d) Imran Khan is full of ego. (e) Imran Khan cannot bring in any change and is only fooling the people because Continue reading
On this 65th Independence day of Pakistan when everyone is in a jubilant mood, patriotic songs which many deemed paindo (villager-taste) are blaring out on every Radio and TV channel, while some armchair-Internet-pundits are discussing the relevance of Pakistaniat and Government is as usual busy doing everything but Nation-building. Makes me wonder how many of us still remember what Pakistan meant for our elders? Here are just three stories among countless others which personally touched me.
First story is of my Maternal Grandfather who until 1947 was a relatively successful businessman in Amritsar (now Indian Punjab). Being informed about political dynamics, he was smart enough to safely move all his family before time to the present Pakistan. Being one of the last to reach Pakistan amongst his family, he witnessed first hand how friendships were tested and how centuries of connection were lost in mere moments.Continue reading
If Islam is the perfect religious and social model of life with high emphasis on fairness for all, where does it go when it comes to the women? To an outsider and thinking insiders, Islam today dictates a patriarchal society where women take a back seat in every regard while being reminded that it is for their own good. Women are easily objectified and are without hesitation compared with walking piece of meat if not properly dressed and termed as the reason for Man’s temptation. She cannot travel without permission and custodian, but worse of all does not have equal access to legal system as in case of Rape which unfortunately even to this date is not defined in religious jurisprudence and falls in the category of adultery.
It is easy for anyone to be repulsed by these things and it is even rightly so what should be expected out of any sane person, because this does hint at a very serious problem in Muslim world – the disappearance of women from Religious life.
To understand what has happened let us take it from the start. Islam comes in the time when women did not have any rights, access to inheritance, even other two Abrahamic religion were not in favour of divorce and especially in region Continue reading
Somewhere in 2000 I am rushing to mosque for Zuhr (afternoon) prayers, I grab few friends with me as I know it is a good deed to invite more people to a noble cause. Especially calling those you love to the right path; after will you like your younger brother burning in hell fire?
I notice there is a man with long beard, wearing army camouflage jacket with a lean-slender physique in the first row just behind the Imam (prayer leader). After prayer the Imam announces that a Commander has joined us today and will like Continue reading
Exactly what is wrong with Pakistan is what is wrong with Muslim world in general but just on steroids thanks to the various artificial injections. Almost all of the Muslim world is sunk in a pessimist state; with their generation after generation reading the chapters of glories now lost which they cannot see in sight – while they swing ideology from one war and chaos into another!
Obvious choices have ranged from state of total distancing to the quest for finding reasons and eventually dissent. But as with anything else the ever so resilient house of Shem has problem admitting the Continue reading
